Attractive Sales Concepts and Onboarding in Travel Retail

Airports are no longer just transit points—they are shopping destinations. Non-passenger visitors are increasingly contributing to profits, driven by events and the expansion of commercial spaces across airports. In collaboration with Gebr. Heinemann, we facilitate faster supplier onboarding by ensuring the seamless exchange of product information. Our certifierd GDSN (Global Data Synchronisation Network (GS1 GDSN®)) data pool, enables global synchronization of master data, eliminating the need for outdated manual processes.

A strong community for established standards.

The Travel Retail Data Innovation Group (TRDIG) was founded in 2017 by Gebr. Heinemann to “define a standard for global master data exchange in travel retail with the highest possible degree of automation“. Therefore, TRDIG relies on GDSN data pools. A central concern of TRDIG is the provision of high-quality master data. Error-free and complete information can increase efficiency for all parties involved. Therefore, the TRDIG community is continuously working on a global data model and relies on the support of GDSN® data pools. The Global Data Synchronization Network (GS1 GDSN®) is a standard that has established itself on the international market for the exchange of product information. This standard is not only to be used worldwide by the community, but also to be jointly developed further.

Key benefits of the TRDIG
  • Worldwide exchange of your product information via GS1 GDSN®
  • Reliable and complete product data from a “Single Source of Truth”
  • Automation and validation of data maintenance reduces the error rate
  • Valid product information for the start in omni-channel
  • Cost and time savings and therefore a significantly improved time-to-market

Things to know when starting out in the Travel Retail sector

What is Product Content and why do I need a GTIN? Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about Travel Retail, 1WorldSync and GDSN®.

Product master data (product content) is the information that describes the product in terms of its properties. This includes, for example, logistical information on weight and dimensions, regulatory information (e.g. EU 1169) and marketing-specific information including the image of the product. This information is essential for the performance process at the trading partner and also for internal company communication.

For the exchange of product master data, a large part of the FMCG, travel retail and healthcare industry uses the Global Data Synchronization Network – GDSN for short. All article master data is thus transmitted barrier-free from the manufacturing company to one or more trading partners via a global data pool. 1WorldSync is one of the leading global data pools. Product information can thus be made available to all trading partners connected to the GDSN.

The GTIN is a unique product identification number (ID). It consists of 14 numeric characters that identify not only the article itself, but also its packaging unit (base article, carton and, if applicable, the pallet). The GTIN is encoded by bar code. By reading the barcode, trading partners, among others, are able to process information about products efficiently and centrally. For many trading partners, the GTIN is aprerequisite for a listing process. A GTIN can be ordered quickly and easily on the GS1 Germany website.

GDSN® stands for Global Data Synchronization Network. Product master data is exchanged between manufacturers and trading partners via the GDSN®. Here, the GDSN® follows the “one to many, many to one” approach. Conversely, this means that product master data only has to be published once in order to provide several trading partners simultaneously with validated, structured and complete product content in an automated manner. The GDSN® connects more than 40 certified data pools worldwide, such as that of 1WorldSync. Approximately 25,000 companies are connected to these data pools. In order to uniquely identify items in the GDSN®, there are key fields. Some of these key fields are the GTIN, the GLN (Global Location Number), the Target Market (TM) and the Global Product Classification (GPC).

Gebr. Heinemann has set itself the goal since 2017 of using the GDSN as an exchange platform for product information. In addition to Gebr. Heinemann , other travel retail partners and manufacturers who are members of the TRDIG community support this approach. Another goal is to create a uniform data model for the travel retail sector, i.e., the requirements for attributes, so that all trading partners have predominantly the same requirements with regard to the product master data for the manufacturers. You can find all details about the requirements of Gebr. Heinemann in the Requirement Sheet in our Download Center.

1WorldSync offers its customers several ways to publish the product master data to the trading partners. The easiest way is via the WebUI (browser-based user interface), where the data can be provided via an input mask or upload function. Alternatively, a direct connection to your backend system (e.g. ERP, PIM etc.) via a machine-to-machine interface is possible.
