Feeding America® provides low-income individuals and families with the fuel to survive and even thrive. As the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, our network members supply food to 37 million Americans each year, including nearly 14 million children and 3 million seniors. Serving the entire United States, more than 200 member food banks support more than 61,000 agencies that address hunger in all of its forms.
The Feeding America national office and its member food banks independently create and assign unique identifiers to track and manage the 3 billion pounds of food that move through our network annually. These unique identifiers or SKUs (stock keeping units) vary from food bank to food bank even for the same grocery item. We are excited to be working with 1WorldSync to standardize on the UPC/GTIN identifiers as a means to improve operations.
We are adopting the UPC/GTIN identifier within our warehouse information systems. Cross referencing the GS1’s industry standard identifier with current SKUs provides a unique identifier and improved product traceability. Utilizing the UPC/GTIN will allow us to improve operations (inventory management, transportation, and product statistics), food safety (product recalls and traceability), and nutritional analysis (nutrition facts, ingredients, allergens).
